Trailers
What are trailers? Trailers are a very important type of distrabution in the movie world. Trailers usually consist of a series of selected shots from the film and advertise it to the audience. The purpose of this is to attract the audience to the film and so they would usually include the most exciting, funny or otherwise interesting part of the film without giving away too much and spoiling the film. Thus, the scenes are not in order of which they appear in the film.
Some trailers use ''sepcial shoot'' footage which is filming that does not appear in the actual film but is created distinctively for the trailer.
As a group, we started to watch trailers to give us an idea of the kind of trailer we would like to produce. We watched the previous year's work, we watched trailers of different genres and in the end we decided to do an action crime film after having watched The Silencer which interested us in making a trailer to a similar sort of genre. I wanted to influence our film trailer on well known action, typical 'gangster' movies such as The Godfather, American Gangster, Scarface etc.

A2 Example - The Silencer
This example of what the A2 class did in 2011 influenced us to do a kind of similar genre. We wanted to challenge ourselves as neither of us had done any action genre based filming. The beginning of this trailer caught my eye when the location shot came in as it was filmed brilliantly and the use of camera was really good. The location seemed really busy and many people are around so it fits in with the action genre. Also, it shows that they put in a lot of effort in going outside school to film and obviously thought about which location tom use. I also like the cuts they use as he is walking down the stairs and then comes to a close up of him holding the suitcase. My favourite camera shot out of the whole trailer was when his face is being pulled into the water, and it looks as if it's being filmed inside the water underneath his face, I thought that shot was very effective. There are a lot of close up shots to guns which makes the trailer relevant to typical action trailers. There are also shots of the actors running and fighting so there is a lot of movement in the film which fits in to the genre. This confides the audience that the actual film is filled with a lot of action which is what they would have hoped to see if they went to watch an action film. There is clear use of editing and looks like they put in time and effort in editing the trailer with the sound effects of gunshots and the fire effects. The music choice of the trailer was also planned out very well. It went with the genre of action really well. The last scene when the car blows up and the actor is casually walking away is very effective and suspenseful. Overall, I really enjoyed this film trailer, it gave our group an idea of what we could do and how we could make ours original and different.
GANGSTER SQUAD
There are many different screen shots in the film such as close-up shot on Ryan Gosling's face to show his facial expression. Emma stone is shown in a long shot this was so they could be able to see the body expression and also see the facial expression, also it allows the audience to be able to view the mise en scene and the people around who are blurred out showing the importance of Emma stone in the scene. gangster squad has a male leading role and Emma stone playing a female role this helps attract a female audience, this is something which we would like to have as well. we chose this trailer as the genre is the same as ours and its set similar to ours. The target audience for the film would be younger/older adults more specifically boys, as the connotations of the film have aspects which boys are known to be a lot more interested than girls, for example there's a lot of crime and guns involved.
Production and Distribution
The production companies which are being shown are few of the biggest companies in the film industry, and because of this audiences have much more faith in them than smaller production companies as they are aware there is more money being spent on it. 20th Century Fox Pictures, is one of the six major American film studios as of 2011. Dimension Films is a major American film production and distribution studios formerly owned by the Walt Disney studio, it is now owned by the weinston company. It was formerly used as Bob weinstien's label within miramax films, to produce and release genre films.

FILM NOIR
Black and white movies made post-war from around 1945 to early 1950s. The characters are urban or street types who are escaping from trouble or torment. There may be some psycho-analysis in the movie, the characters may be off-beat or eccentric, or criminals, or just hard-boiled. The lighting is important, it should have lots of shadows, night shots, rain-soaked streets with reflections of skyscrapers. The theme is that man is trapped in a world he cannot change, cornered with no way out literally and psychologically of a difficult situation. That is the tension. The stories are about desperate people who live on the edge, maybe their lives are hopeless and full of despair. It could be a mystery or a drama.
Dark or dim lighting effects, dreary settings, filtered lights and generally dark themes and characterizations. Noir scenes are made from interesting camera angles and with dramatic close-ups and shadowed lighting. Frequently the stories use of smoke-filled rooms, views of light filtered through venetian blinds, seedy downtown areas with neon lights, dark wet streets to heighten the noir effect. Brightly-lit scenes are not used in noir films since the desired effect is that of dreary hopelessness.
FILM NOIR POSTERS
Film noir is usually described as
Main Title - In the middle of the poster, colours Red which could sign death/blood/fire. Both the main actors are looking in the same direction which could imply to the viewers that the two probably work together. However, the woman does look like a Femme Fatale because of the way she is represented in the poster, is on a much bigger scale to the man which may suggest she's more powerful. She has red lips and raised eyebrow which makes her seem seductive but deceptive at the same time. The man is holding a gun but not looking in the same direction, which may mean that he's doing a hit and run or a free shoot also he may be doing this to be discreet.
The background colour is two shades of blue, the top half is where the women is and the shade is darker this could be linked to her personality, as if she's got a dull dark personality, and the man has the lighter shade which may mean he's got a brighter personality.

The title has bold-ish letters, bright colours of yellow, and it stands out. The femme fetal on the bottom left looks elegant and classy but dangerous at the same time, she's wearing an elegant dress with a slit showing a bit of skin. The gun indicqtes to the viewers that there is a bad side to her and she is so,ewhat dangerous.
The man on the top right looks like an inspector, this is obvious by looking at the Fedora hat and the Cigarette. It looks likes he's looking at the Femme Fetal in a suspicious way.
At the bottom of the poster shows that there is the theme of romance in the film either romance between both that man and woman or two other people; either way it is an important scene within the film.

The title is at the bottom of the poster, but it's the largest writing so we automatically open our eyes to it as it is also in a different colour.
The femme fatale standing at the bottom looks quite innocent and maybe that tells us a bit about the film and that maybe she acts this way throughout the film that she is innocent but she probably is not so it adds mystery.
The Protoganist must the biggest image on the poster as it shows he's superior in some situations. He's looking out of blinds, this gives us the impression that perhaps he's caught the femme fetal out and trying too keep an eye on what the she is up to.
